Taxis:
Taxis are cheap in Dumfries.  A standard ride from the town centre to campus costs around £4-5. Most cars have four seats, but some have more. It’s recommended that you book taxis in advance. There are several taxi companies in Dumfries- here are a few numbers for you:

Trains:
Trains from Dumfries run towards north towards Kilmarnock and Glasgow and south towards Carlisle and Newcastle.

If you get the train more than a few times a year, it’s worth checking out the 16-25 Railcard, which gets you 1/3 off all rail journeys. The railcard costs £30 and is valid for one year. For example, the £20.50 open return to Glasgow is reduced to £13.55. Don’t worry over 25’s- if you are a full time student you are also eligible.

A popular journey for students is a trip to Carlisle. An off-peak day return costs £6 (or £3.95 with a railcard) and journey times are around 40 minutes each way. For more information on Dumfries station and services check the Scotrail website.
